Vibrations, Tension and Damping – Orb-Weaver Spiders

    Creature Teacher: The Orb-Weaver Spider
    Science Category: Physics
    Suggested Grades: 2–7

Students investigate vibrations, tension and damping by comparing how a small movement travels through straight, slack and pinched strands of string. Inspired by the way orb-weaver spiders sense activity through their webs, this hands-on investigation challenges learners to detect a hidden signal using only their fingertips.

Children make predictions, complete repeated comparisons and test whether they can distinguish a real pluck from no movement at all. Because the signal can be subtle, learners must pay close attention to the evidence rather than simply look for the biggest reaction.

The pack also includes two optional paper-plate activities:

    • Build a Stronger Web: Design, test and improve a yarn web.

    • Reveal a Hidden Web: Use wax resist and watercolor to create a web that appears beneath the paint.

Designed for Grades 2–7, the main investigation takes approximately 30–45 minutes and uses simple household or classroom materials.

All Creature Curriculum resources are educator-designed and built to support joyful, meaningful science learning. Each lesson is part of a growing, interconnected library of science investigations where creatures lead the way.

    Field-guided. Educator made.
