Sound, Reflection and Echolocation – Bat
Creature Teacher: The Bat
Science Category: Physics
Can you change what you hear without changing the speaker’s volume?
Students investigate sound reflection and absorption using two cardboard tubes, a metal pan and a towel. Inspired by bats that hunt using echolocation, this hands-on experiment challenges children to compare what they hear with a bare pan, a towel-covered pan and no pan at all.
Then, play Find the Hidden Moth—a two-player deduction game where children use clues to locate hidden prey in as few calls as possible. Includes a smaller starter grid and a larger challenge grid.
Designed for Grades 2–7, this 30–45-minute investigation includes a creature introduction, step-by-step experiment directions, a printer-friendly results sheet, science explanations, game boards and ideas to extend the learning. Uses simple household or classroom materials.
