Odder Novel - Book Study
A Science + Literature Novel Study for Grades 3–6
What if a novel study felt less like filling in answers—and more like stepping inside the story?
This three-part study invites learners to read Odder by Katherine Applegate as both literary investigators and wildlife researchers. As Odder plays, survives, remembers, heals, and learns to care for another otter, students explore the real literature and science beneath her journey.
They’ll experiment with free verse, explore perspective, tension, flashbacks, foreshadowing, identity, and character change, investigate buoyancy, trapped air, kelp-forest ecology, and heat loss, create models and art, make a no-sew otter pouch, analyze the field record of a real surrogate-reared California sea otter, and use evidence to complete a meaningful final project.
Every investigation grows directly from the novel—helping learners understand not only what happens, but why it matters.
