About Creature Curriculum

What is Creature Curriculum?

Creature Curriculum is a hands-on science curriculum where animals are the teachers! Each lesson uses fascinating animal adaptations and behaviors to teach science concepts kids love to explore, from physics to ecosystems.

What age groups is the curriculum designed for?

We have three tailored programs:

  • Young Explorers (Grades K-2): Fun, hands-on activities focusing on play and discovery.
  • Explorers (Grades 3-5): Engaging experiments and lessons where kids record observations and dive deeper into science.
  • Navigators (Grades 6-8): Independent inquiry-based learning with more advanced experiments and critical thinking challenges.

Why are the studies grouped in 3 learning stages and not grade-by-grade?

Creature Curriculum groups studies into three-year learning stages—Young Explorers (K-2), Explorers (3-5), and Navigators (6-8)—to provide flexibility for multi-age learning and accommodate different skill levels within an age range.

Here’s why we take this approach:

  1. Multi-Age Learning: Many families and classrooms include children at different levels. Grouping by stages allows siblings or students to learn together while engaging with content at an appropriate depth.
  2. Developmental Growth: Kids learn at different paces. A three-year range ensures that younger students can engage with a topic at their level while older students can explore more complex concepts.
  3. Flexibility: Rather than rigid grade levels, our approach allows parents and educators to choose the best fit based on a child’s interest and ability, not just age or grade

Do I need a science background to teach this?

Nope! Our lessons are designed to be clear, approachable, and easy to follow for both seasoned educators and first-time homeschool parents. You’ll have everything you need to guide your learners through exciting science topics.

Is the curriculum secular?

Yes, Creature Curriculum is a secular science program. Our focus is on fostering curiosity and exploration of the natural world through hands-on learning.

How long does each lesson take?

Lessons typically take 30-60 minutes, but they’re flexible and can be adapted based on your schedule and how deep your child wants to dive into a topic.

Purchasing and Using the Curriculum

Can I buy just one unit?

Absolutely! You can purchase individual lessons or full unit studies, allowing you to customize your learning experience.

How are the lessons delivered?

All lessons are available as digital downloads, so you can access them instantly and start teaching right away.

Are materials for experiments included?

To keep the curriculum affordable, we don’t include physical materials. However, most supplies are common household items or inexpensive to purchase. Each lesson includes a detailed materials list to help you prepare.

Are the lessons aligned with educational standards?

Yes, our lessons are guided by NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards), making it easy for public school educators and homeschoolers to align with recognized science learning objectives.

Can I use the curriculum with multiple children of different ages?

Absolutely! Each unit study offers three versions—one for each age group—so while the topic remains the same (e.g., Energy), the lessons are tailored to meet the learning standards and objectives for each stage.

If you have a Young Explorer and a Navigator, you can absolutely study the same topic at the same time, but their lessons will be different. The good news is that the Navigator’s study is designed to be largely self-directed, allowing them to explore independently while you focus on guiding your Young Explorer.

If your children are close in age—such as a Young Explorer on the cusp of becoming an Explorer—you may choose to teach both using the upper-grade unit and make simple adaptations for the younger learner. This flexibility allows families to customize their learning experience while keeping science engaging for everyone!

Conservation and Giving Back!

How does Creature Curriculum give back?

We believe in giving back to the incredible creatures that inspire our lessons. That’s why 10% of every purchase (and up to 100% during certain conservation initiatives) supports wildlife conservation efforts, helping protect animals and their habitats.

What organizations do you support?

Our donations support various wildlife conservation efforts, such as marine sanctuaries, pollinator gardens, and rainforest preservation. Check our “Giving Back” page for more details about the specific projects we’re contributing to!

Using the Curriculum

I’m new to homeschooling. Is this a good fit for beginners?

Yes! Creature Curriculum is designed to be user-friendly and engaging for parents and kids alike. Each lesson provides step-by-step instructions, making it a great choice for families just starting their homeschool journey.

Do you provide any resources to supplement the lessons?

Yes, we offer free printables, activity ideas, and even coloring sheets to complement the lessons. Be sure to check out our “Free Resources” page!

How much prep work is involved?

For most lessons, prep time is minimal—simply gather materials, review the guide, and you’re ready to explore! We aim to keep prep time minimal. Each lesson comes with a detailed guide, a materials list, and optional printouts to make setup as easy as possible.

Other Questions

Can I use this curriculum in a classroom?

Yes! While Creature Curriculum is perfect for homeschool families, it's also a great resource for public and private school teachers looking for engaging, hands-on science lessons.

For classroom settings, we recognize that printing full child-friendly lesson plans for every student may not be practical. That’s why we’ve created and included lab sheets specifically designed for larger groups—teachers have the full lesson plan, while students receive a streamlined lab sheet to guide their learning and document their work as they progress through the lesson. This makes implementation easy while keeping lessons interactive and engaging!

Do you offer discounts for schools or groups?

We do! Contact us directly for group purchasing options and discounts for schools, co-ops, or large homeschool groups.

Can I use Creature Curriculum as a full-year science curriculum?

Yes! Creature Curriculum works as a full-year science curriculum when units are combined, but it’s designed for a three-year cycle. You don’t need to cover every topic each year—instead, students gradually explore Physical, Life, Earth, Environmental Science, and STEAM over three years before revisiting topics with greater depth in the next learning stage. If you’d like a structured approach, we offer pacing guides to help balance topics across multiple years.

Can I reach out for help or additional support?

Of course! If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch through our Contact page. We’re here to help!
